••• When I create a design, especially a logo, I try to capture the essence - the soul - of the company. My work is a balance between the art and science of design. The art of design is the ability to communicate the essence of an idea. The science of design is to deliver a beautiful and accurate printed piece on budget and on time.

••• Life is a journey, and it wasn’t immediately obvious to me to become a designer. Before I travelled this path, I started out by joining the Army at age 17 as an Interrogator and German linguist. After four years of service, I was lured by the call of the sea and tried my hand as a Commercial Diver. I dove in nuclear reactor cooling tanks in Quad Cities and spent time in Alaska harvesting sea cucumbers under the aurora borealis. Then one day, it was time to head south. I left my fate to a coin toss. Heads, I drive to Texas to work on the oil rigs, or tails I go to art school. Thus, as fate or luck would have it, began my journey down the road to J. Paul Design.
